On August 28th LindenLab® announced their release of Second Life 1.21 RC0 exiting! Well this release will be the first of it’s kind as it will enable the option for getting your scripts compiled to MONO through a new option in the script editor. And after a while they released a new revision that corrected the bug that prevented PPC mac users from using it, now its all clear and everybody should be able to use it. Also, for some people it seems that this new viewer isn’t having a good performance, I encourage reading the Release Notes for this viewer, as they explain they have enabled the thread-watchdog debug function which slows down the performance as each thread is enabled to monitoring, this can be fixed by adding a command line argument.

This article is intended to be light introduction about business in Second Life and the basic steps for getting into.
With the launch of Second Life® in 2003 we got a new and exciting chance to an opportunity for starting business, offer our services across this virtual environment. I just discovered it go impressed with the rich content, the great chance to get my ideas go worldwide. As everybody in Second Life I started having no idea of where to go, what to do and what the possibilities were. Then exploring I saw some amazing buildings, landscapes and other user-made content. And the truth is that the community is who made Second Life what it is today; and after looking at all of these things I decided that I had to participate in this, and as I work as graphical designer in real life and I’m programmer as hobby, after some training I decided to found SecondSolutions. This is my business in Second Life, the meaning of it it’s providing design or scripting solutions to people who wants to create a rich environment, for enjoying this virtual world, or for other persons that want to offer their own services, like opening a store or a club.

Problems with LSL
July 29, 2008 at 7:49 am | In LSL, Projects, SecondSolutions | Leave a CommentTags: dns, inter-sim, LSL, scripts, second life, SecondSolutions, workaround
Here in SecondSolutions we are having to face a new problem with our management system, the limitations of the LSL language and some problems related to the sim communication architecture.
Due to this limitations the only way to implement the inter-sim communication is through a little tricky workaround. And one of the other problems we are facing is the lack of a system to know the uuid of a object at a given time, we have to build our own kind of “dns” system for knowing what is the uuid of any given object in any sim, and doing this with the minimum user interaction.
Some progress has already been made with this dns system, but it will still take some time until it’s fully implemented because it will also handle all the inter-sim communications and will implement an API for other projects to use this systems.
The other problem we faced is even more tricky to make a workaround, this problem is the imposibility for LSL to write to a notecard, so if you want to save any configuration data in real time… unless you use a external server there is currently no way for doing this. The way w use to go throught this, well basicly we will implement a PHP/MySQL interface that interacts with the scripts, and that stores, prepares, and delivers all the configuration and all the data we need. We are also creating a system to by pass this problem without the PHP interface but this isn’t very clear for now.

Current Project

As you know SecondSolutions started recently and is starting with a big project aimed to provide estate owners with a good tool that enables them to manage their sims in a proper way. We know there are other solutions like this already but our aim is to provide a feature set that will be easy to use, and powerful enough to handle hundreds of sims with minimal effor for the owner. A complete list of features will be released soon when the progress of the whole project reaches a status of about 75% completed, and we are still also working on the name for the project, a few ideas are being discussed but it will only be made public when it is all clear; for now it will be kept for the SecondSolutions team members and consultors.
There was a need of such a product that helps owners to manage their sims/lands in a way they don’t need to be keeping track of each one individually, or even per simulator individually. So our goal will be to provide the tools they need, with a easy to handle interface for buyer and owner. Once we acomplish this, we will be adding more features. This way it won’t happen like with similar products that attempted to get all at once, and they failed because of their lack to focus on each task, and this results on each feature appear to be incomplete or not well implemented.
If you are estate owner or sim owner, and you are interested in such product you can subscribe to our RSS channel to recive the lastest updates for this product. We will be posting progress in this site as it goes developed.
